Revolutionary Square Market Popped Up In Federation Square

Melbourne’s small business heroes use innovative new payments technology Square Reader at pop-up marketplace in Federation Square

Global payments technology company Square launched a unique pop-up marketplace at Federation Square hosting Melbourne’s favourite small businesses, who were amongst the first to trade directly to the public with the innovative new card payment device, Square Reader, which was launched in Australia in March.

Square Reader allow traders to accept credit and debit card payments quickly and securely from their smartphone or tablet device, providing seamless, simple transactions for both sellers and shoppers.

The new innovation in payments technology had been hotly anticipated and so it was fitting to see some of the city’s coolest sellers take part in the marketplace and be among the first to get their hands on Square Reader. Among our favourite were Those Girls (selling their sensational iced teas), 5 & Dime Bagel (who helped to crave our lunchtime hunger) and we couldn’t go past the luxury custom made chocolate eggs from Sisko Chocolate who solved our client Easter gift dilemma…we placed a bulk egg order for our clients who loved the unique delivery. Let’s just say we did our fair share of trading along the stalls and certainly put Square Reader to the test!

The Victorian Minister for Small Business the Hon Philip Dalidakis joined Square Country Manager, Ben Pfister, for a media walk through, stopping for an ice cream purchase along the way.

And of course media were in praise of the new technology…our local buskers accepting credit card for the first time became a talking point – we think they spent more time taking media requests than playing for crowds!
