As OpenAI hosts Australia’s first AI-led group workout in Brisbane, new data shows millions of people are already turning to ChatGPT for fitness support.

  • One in three Aussies (32%) now train with ChatGPT, using AI to power their fitness and wellness goals.

  • With traditional gym fees averaging more than $77 per month, research shows that affordability and personalisation are driving Aussies toward AI-powered fitness routines.

  • The research comes as OpenAI hosts Australia’s first AI-designed group workout in Brisbane, showcasing the top prompts to train smarter.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is fast becoming Australians’ newest workout partner, with new national research from OpenAI revealing one in three Australians (32%) now use ChatGPT to support their fitness and wellness routines, from building personalised workout plans to meal prep and motivation. And momentum is continuing to build, with almost half of Aussies (47%) intending to use ChatGPT for fitness and wellness by the end of the year.

Alongside cost-of-living pressures and gym memberships averaging more than $77 per month, OpenAI marked the shift by hosting Australia’s first AI-powered group workout in Brisbane, highlighting the technology’s role in reshaping how Australians train and stay active.

While 71% of Aussies set a New Year’s resolution each year, most abandon it by the end of January.

Despite strong “New Year, New Me” motivation, OpenAI’s research shows that pricing remains a key consideration for people who are exploring more accessible ways to manage their health and fitness goals.

The survey shows that affordability is the number one driver of AI adoption in fitness, with almost one in five (17%) Aussies citing cost savings as the primary reason they incorporate tools like ChatGPT into their routines, over-indexing among Millennials. Personalisation is the next biggest drawcard, ranking as the top priority among Gen Z.

Confidence in AI tools is also strengthening, with almost half (45%) of Aussies saying AI tools will help them stick to their fitness and wellness goals. Increasingly, AI is being used as a complementary fitness companion, with almost a third (29%) of fitness-engaged Aussies turning to ChatGPT to create at-home workout routines that fit around busy schedules, and one in four Australians (25%) using it for recipe inspiration and meal planning.

Who’s Using AI for Fitness?

From early-morning park runs to post-work Pilates, adoption spans the country and across generations, with clear trends emerging.

  • Men are more inclined to use ChatGPT for fitness and wellness than women (35% compared to 29%).

  • Younger Aussies are leading the charge, with 57% of Gen Z and 52% of Millennials using ChatGPT to support their fitness goals.

  • Interestingly, 8% of Aussies aged 65+ already use AI for fitness, with a further 11% intending to by the end of 2026.

  • Geographically, the Northern Territory leads the nation at 39%, with adoption expected to grow by a further 10% this year. Victoria (37%) and New South Wales (35%) follow closely behind.

Australia’s First AI-Designed Group Workout

The research was released as OpenAI hosted Australia’s first AI-led group fitness class in Brisbane, alongside fitness enthusiast and content creator Caity Viant, who used her experience refining training plans and nutrition with ChatGPT to design a group workout. Every element of the class, from the room layout to the music playlist and even the post-workout smoothies, was created using ChatGPT.

“With gym memberships and living costs front of mind for many, more Aussies are turning to ChatGPT as a personal trainer in their pocket, not just to save money, but for the convenience and tailored support it offers. Fitness and wellness are now among the top three ways Australians are using ChatGPT, as busy households look for tools that simplify decision-making and fit around work and family life. With weekly active users in Australia more than doubling in the past year, and Aussies ranking among the top ten globally for paid usage, ChatGPT is fast becoming a trusted, everyday super assistant for Australians, from meal planning to marathon prep.

Chloe Browne, OpenAI’s Head of Communications for Australia and New Zealand

“As a long-time fitness enthusiast, I use ChatGPT to complement my training and nutrition plans, adjusting them around specific goals and races. It helps me map my macros, refine sessions and stay on track. Designing this entire event using AI shows just how practical and efficient these tools can be.”

AI is rapidly cementing its place in Australia’s mainstream wellness toolkit, empowering more Aussies to take control of their health in a more personalised, flexible and affordable way. To help people unlock their fitness goals, ChatGPT has revealed ‘The Workout, by ChatGPT, ’ a downloadable digital booklet featuring go-to prompts designed to support motivation and consistency throughout the year.
